The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly the University of Abuja) has officially approved the promotion of 34 academic staff members to professorial ranks.
This milestone announcement, made by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, follows the council’s 101st regular meeting held on July 10 and 11, 2026. The promotions, which take effect from October 2025, were ratified after a rigorous review of external assessment reports regarding the candidates’ scholarly publications.
Breakdown of Promotions
The 34 newly elevated academics are divided equally between the two top-tier academic ranks:
- Professors: 17 senior academics were promoted to the rank of Professor.
- Associate Professors: 17 academics were elevated to the rank of Associate Professor.
The promotions span a diverse range of disciplines, including Community Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Religious Studies, Guidance and Counselling, Accounting, Library and Information Science, Business Administration, Physics, Parasitology and Entomology, Physiology, Crop Science, Educational Foundations, and Banking and Finance.
Leadership Perspective
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, presided over the council sessions that authorized these advancements.
Expressing his pride in the faculty, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, noted that these elevations are a testament to the institution’s commitment to rewarding hard work, dedication to scholarship, and academic excellence. He emphasized that the university remains dedicated to streamlining its internal processes to ensure that deserving staff receive timely recognition in line with established institutional guidelines.
This announcement coincides with a broader period of administrative renewal at the institution, which also recently appointed a new substantive Registrar, Malam Alkasim Musa Umar, and a new University Librarian, Dr. Rose Lade Mommoh.
