The Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (FUTI), in Ogun State, has officially commenced the construction of a 1.6-MWp/1.5 MWh solar mini-grid. This landmark energy project, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is a pivotal step in the institution’s ongoing transition from a polytechnic to a premier university of technology.
Strengthening Academic Infrastructure
The project, which will occupy approximately three acres of campus land, is designed to provide a stable and sustainable power supply for teaching, research, and innovation. By reducing the university’s reliance on the national grid, the mini-grid is expected to provide the consistent electricity necessary for advanced technological research and student-led innovations.
”An uninterrupted power supply is the backbone of technological advancement,” stated the Rector and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mukail Akinde, during the project’s introduction. “Modern research and student innovations cannot thrive without reliable electricity.”
Project Execution and Oversight
The implementation process is being spearheaded by officials from TETFund in collaboration with Zango Corporate Innovation Limited. The construction team, comprising project consultants and engineers, has been formally introduced to the university’s management, who have assured them of full cooperation to ensure the project’s success.
Enhanced Campus Security
In addition to the energy upgrade, the university has commissioned a new police post on campus. The facility, inaugurated by the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, is intended to strengthen security for both the academic community and the host town.
Dr. Akinde highlighted the importance of this development, noting that safeguarding the lives and property of students is a primary institutional priority. The establishment of this post follows approvals from the Nigeria Police Force to set up a dedicated Squadron Command within the university, further cementing the institution’s commitment to a safe and stable environment for learning.
