LAGOS — Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a major drug trafficking attempt at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, arresting a 38-year-old businesswoman with a massive consignment of illicit substances.
The suspect, identified as Iwebema Ogechi Peace, was apprehended on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at the departure hall of Terminal 2. She was reportedly preparing to board a Qatar Airways flight bound for Beijing, China, when law enforcement stepped in based on targeted, credible intelligence.
A thorough search of her checked-in baggage exposed a sophisticated concealment method: four large parcels of cocaine neatly tucked away into a professionally constructed false bottom at the base of her luggage. Upon extraction, the seized Class A narcotics weighed a combined 7.5 kilograms.
During initial interrogations, Iwebema claimed to be a legitimate trader who frequently travels to China to source commercial merchandise for resale in Nigeria. However, her latest itinerary has instead landed her in federal custody as investigations expand to uncover the broader network behind the shipment.
The NDLEA has reiterated its uncompromising stance on airport security and international drug trafficking, noting that vigilance at the nation’s departure terminals remains at an all-time high to choke off transit routes utilized by syndicates.
