ATLANTA — In a tournament already defined by dramatic underdogs, the most poignant victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has taken place away from the pitch.
Ana Candida Evora, the 59-year-old mother of Cape Verde’s breakout goalkeeping star Josimar José Évora Dias—affectionately known as Vozinha—has been officially granted a visa to enter the United States. The breakthrough ensures she will be in the stands in Miami this weekend to watch her son face Uruguay, turning one of the tournament’s most heart-wrenching human stories into a reality.
A Hero’s Tears
The diplomatic intervention comes directly on the heels of Cape Verde’s stunning 0-0 opening draw against reigning European champions Spain on Monday in Atlanta. Making their historic World Cup debut, the Blue Sharks withstood a 27-shot barrage from the Spanish giants. At the epicenter of the defiance was the 40-year-old Vozinha, who pulled off eight spectacular saves to earn Player of the Match honors.
Yet, as his teammates celebrated one of the biggest shocks in opening-round history, the veteran goalkeeper broke down in tears on the pitch. In a raw, emotional post-match interview, Vozinha revealed that his historic moment was heavy with family absence.
“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents and unfortunately they were not here; they died a few years ago,” Vozinha explained. “I also cried because my mum didn’t manage to be here because of the visa. Because of the money we had to pay for the visa, we didn’t manage to get it done on time. I would like her to be here.”
Vozinha, who did not begin playing football professionally until the age of 25 in 2012, admitted he had previously considered walking away from the sport, staying only to chase this exact World Cup dream.
High Costs and Diplomatic Intervention
Cape Verdean citizens had faced severe administrative and financial hurdles under strict travel guidelines, requiring a returnable $15,000 (£11,200) bond in addition to standard visa fees to enter the United States. While the Trump administration dropped the bond requirement for World Cup ticket holders last month, the policy change came too late for Evora, a cleaner working on the island of São Vicente, whose limited finances had already derailed her travel window.
The goalkeeper’s emotional appeal quickly bypassed sports headlines, capturing the attention of high-level politicians in Washington. On Wednesday, June 17, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that a coordinated effort had successfully broken the administrative deadlock.
Jeffries revealed that he personally intervened, speaking with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to request that the State Department expedite the paperwork.
”Star Cape Verdean goalkeeper Vozinha and his mother will be reunited in Miami in time for the match on Sunday,” Jeffries said in a statement released on X. “No mother should miss the chance to see her child make history. I thank Secretary Rubio, U.S. State Department officials, the government of Cabo Verde and FIFA for working together to make this possible.”
According to officials, all travel and visa fees have been entirely waived under official policy exemptions, and urgent travel arrangements are currently underway to fly Evora out of Cape Verde.
The Stage is Set in Miami
With the family drama resolved, Cape Verde can turn its full focus back to its fairytale campaign in Group H. Following opening-day draws for all four teams—including a 1-1 stalemate between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia—the group rests on a knife-edge.
Cape Verde will square off against South American heavyweights Uruguay this Sunday, June 21, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Armed with defensive discipline and an overnight global fan base, the Blue Sharks will look to orchestrate another giant-killing performance. This time, their veteran anchor will have the one spectator he wanted most watching from the crowd.
