An 81-year-old veteran Hollywood character actor, known for his roles in Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, was tragically killed Wednesday morning outside a residence in Tarzana, California. Los Angeles police have arrested the son of the actor’s girlfriend in connection with the fatal stabbing.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to an emergency call at approximately 9:00 a.m. on June 3, originating from a home in the 19200 block of Erwin Street. According to law enforcement sources, the caller made a series of cryptic, religiously charged statements to dispatchers, allegedly declaring, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the victim, identified as James Handy, unresponsive in the front yard. Handy had sustained multiple stab wounds to his chest. Paramedics rushed the actor to a nearby hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Shortly after the encounter, authorities encountered the suspect, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, a short distance from the property. Investigators report that Gledhill flagged down responding officers and surrendered without further incident, identifying himself as the individual responsible for the assault.
Investigation and Background
Detectives confirmed that Gledhill is the son of Handy’s long-term girlfriend and had been residing at the Tarzana home where the attack took place. While Gledhill has been booked on suspicion of murder and is currently being held on a $2,000,000 bail, authorities have not yet established a clear motive for the violence.
”The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and detectives are working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to this tragic confrontation,” the LAPD stated in a press release.
A Lifelong Career on Screen
Handy’s passing marks the end of a prolific career that spanned over five decades. With nearly 150 acting credits to his name on IMDb, Handy established himself as a reliable and versatile character actor across both film and television.
His notable cinematic contributions include:
- Top Gun: Maverick (2022): Appeared as Jimmy, a local bartender.
- Jumanji (1995): Played the memorable exterminator alongside Robin Williams.
- Taps (1981): An early career milestone in the military drama.
Handy was also a ubiquitous presence on prime-time television, securing guest-starring and recurring roles on landmark series such as The West Wing, The X-Files, ER, NCIS: Los Angeles, Criminal Minds, and The Young and the Restless.
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare to file formal charges.
