ABEOKUTA — Healthcare delivery at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, ground to a halt on Thursday as resident doctors commenced a three-day warning strike. The industrial action follows a severe security breach at the House Officers’ Quarters, where intruders managed to infiltrate the residential facility and rob junior physicians.
The strike, which is scheduled to run from June 4 to June 6, 2026, was declared following an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) called by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), FMC Abeokuta chapter.
Persistent Lapses and the Catalyst Incident
According to a communiqué issued by the association, the immediate trigger for the withdrawal of services was a recent burglary incident during which criminals carted away valuable personal property. Stolen items included five mobile phones, a laptop computer, an undisclosed amount of cash, and a driver’s license.
The union emphasized that this latest breach is not an isolated event but rather the tipping point in a series of unresolved security failures. The recurring incidents have left healthcare workers living on-site in a state of constant anxiety, fearing for their personal safety.
The communiqué, jointly signed by ARD President, Dr. Olanipekun Quadri Arise-Kola, and the Assistant General Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Alawode, stressed that the psychological well-being of medical personnel has been severely compromised, making it impossible to deliver quality patient care.
Comprehensive Demands Presented to Management
To restore industrial harmony, the ARD has laid out a strict list of demands that hospital management must address before normal operations can resume:
1.Full Restitution: Immediate compensation or replacement of all cash and personal valuables stolen from the affected medical officers.
2.Security Contractor Overhaul: The immediate termination of the contract with the current security firm and the hiring of a competent, effective alternative.
3.Infrastructure Reinforcement: The installation of functional Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations, reinforcement of the perimeter fencing, and the provision of adequate lighting across the hospital grounds and residential quarters.
4.Active Law Enforcement Presence: The establishment of a functional police post staffed by active officers near the quarters, alongside regular nighttime patrols to deter criminal activity.
5.Fortified Surveillance: The deployment of armed security personnel to boost emergency response capabilities within the hospital premises.
A Growing National Crisis
The situation at FMC Abeokuta reflects a worrying national trend regarding the safety of healthcare professionals in Nigeria. Just days prior to this action, resident doctors at FMC Owo and its Akure annex in Ondo State launched a similar 72-hour strike following a violent assault on a physician on duty.

While the FMC Abeokuta ARD reiterated its desire to maintain a professional and cordial relationship with the hospital administration, they maintained that worker safety remains entirely non-negotiable.
As of press time, the hospital management has yet to release an official statement regarding the strike or outline contingency plans to manage clinical operations and emergency services during the three-day window.
