A teenage man from Gokwe South has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison following his conviction for the sexual assault of his 42-year-old aunt. The brutal attack, which took place in mid-May, has sent shockwaves through the local community.
According to details released by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) in a bulletin dated June 2, 2026, the incident occurred at approximately 05:00 AM on May 16, 2026. The victim and the offender were traveling together, walking to a neighboring village to undertake casual labor, when the journey took a violent turn.
State prosecutors revealed that the teenager suddenly turned on his relative, grabbing her by the neck and violently tripping her to the ground. Despite the victim fighting back fiercely to defend herself, she was ultimately overpowered by the assailant.
The assault was cut short by a member of the public who heard desperate cries for help emanating from the nearby bushes. Upon investigating the distress noises, the passerby caught the offender in the act and immediately intervened, rescuing the woman and ensuring she returned home safely.
In addition to halting the attack, the witness played a pivotal role in ensuring justice was served by promptly alerting law enforcement. This intervention led to the immediate arrest of the teenager.
Following a fast-tracked court trial, the teenager was found guilty and handed a 15-year jail term.
Reacting to the sentencing, the NPAZ reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against sexual and gender-based violence, warning that perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law. The authority also commended the public-spirited bystander and urged citizens to continue reporting such crimes swiftly to ensure justice is delivered.
