‘Dead’ Brazilian Man, 88, Found Breathing on Funeral Home Preparation Table

PRESIDENTE PRUDENTE, Brazil — Authorities in southeastern Brazil have launched a criminal investigation after an 88-year-old man, who had been officially declared dead by a hospital physician, shocked mortuary workers by showing clear signs of life just as they began preparing his body for a wake.

​The extraordinary incident began at a healthcare facility in Presidente Bernardes, where Juraci Rosa Alves, a resident of nearby Emilianópolis, had been admitted for acute medical distress. A physician at the hospital subsequently pronounced Alves dead, citing respiratory failure as the cause of death, and authorized the release of his body.

​A local funeral home was summoned to transport Alves for standard post-mortem procedures. However, the routine preparation took a stunning turn once the octogenarian arrived at the mortuary laboratory.

​”Our funeral staff carried out the transfer as a standard procedure,” Jacqueline Brogiato, the funeral home’s technical nursing supervisor, told local media outlets. “When they arrived at the laboratory and placed him on the table, they noticed unusual movement in the abdomen and were unsure whether it was breathing.”

​Realizing they were dealing with a living patient rather than a corpse, the mortuary team immediately shifted into lifesaving mode.

​”Our only thought was to save him,” Brogiato said. “So I carried out the initial care, trying to clear his airway until emergency services arrived. Everything happened very quickly – when they arrived, the doctor immediately began sedating and intubating him so he could be taken to the healthcare facility.”

​As the medical emergency unfolded at the funeral home, Alves’s family members were entirely unaware of the administrative mix-up.

​”My aunt had gone home to prepare the paperwork and the clothes my grandad was going to wear for the wake,” a relative recounted to local journalists. When family members arrived at the mortuary, they grew suspicious of the delays. “Then my cousin was told he had been taken to the funeral home to prepare the body and, once there, the funeral home staff noticed vital signs – he was breathing and moving.”

​Alves was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Presidente Prudente, where he remains intubated. Medical professionals describe his condition as serious but stable.

​However, legal and medical experts warn that the terrifying ordeal may have caused lasting damage. Carlos Alberto Carneiro, the attorney representing the Alves family, noted that the interruption in regular medical care could have long-term consequences. “According to the hospital currently treating Mr. Juraci, the situation may have worsened his condition due to his age and the amount of time he spent without proper care and treatment,” Carneiro stated.

​Civil police have officially registered the case under the classification of “failure to provide assistance” to determine how the profound medical error occurred. Investigators have not yet publicly released the identity of the doctor who signed the initial death certificate.

​In response to the growing public outcry, the administration of the original hospital in Presidente Bernardes announced it will launch an internal administrative inquiry to review its death-pronouncement protocols, stating they remain fully “available to provide any necessary clarification” to the police and the family.
