
LAGOS, NIGERIA – The stars of African cinema descended upon the Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday, May 9, 2026, for the prestigious 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). The ceremony, a cornerstone of the continent’s film and television industry, celebrated a year of exceptional digital storytelling and cinematic achievement.
Hosted against the vibrant backdrop of Lagos, the 2026 awards saw a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars taking home the coveted plaques. The night was not only a showcase of talent but a testament to the evolving technical prowess of African filmmakers, with films like Colours of Fire and My Father’s Shadow dominating the early technical categories.
The Big Winners
The 12th edition introduced stiff competition across diverse genres. Valerie Okeke secured the first win of the night for Best Costume Design for her work on Colours of Fire, while Hakeem Onilogbo, popularly known as Hakeem Effect, clinched the Best Makeup award for the epic Warlord.
In a significant nod to international collaboration and storytelling depth, My Father’s Shadow won both Best Sound Design and Best Writing (Movie). Meanwhile, the digital space was well-represented by Emmanuel Kanaga and Sophia Chisom, who took home the award for Best Digital Content Creator for their viral hit Leave To Live.
