The Nottingham Crown Court has sentenced Adedapo Adegbola, 40, to life in prison for the “senseless and horrific” murder of his former colleague and partner, Stephanie Irons. Adegbola, a social worker, must serve a minimum of 25 years before being eligible for parole.
The court heard a chilling account of obsession and premeditation. After 23-year-old Stephanie ended their brief relationship due to Adegbola’s controlling behavior, he refused to accept the rejection. On October 21, Adegbola tracked Stephanie to her home in Mapperley, armed with knives he had purchased days earlier specifically for the attack.
A Calculated Crime
Prosecutors revealed that Adegbola entered Stephanie’s home after she stepped out to take out the bins. Inside, he inflicted multiple wounds, including a fatal blow to her neck. In a final act of cruelty, he remained in the flat for nearly two hours while she lay dying, using her phone to send sexually explicit messages to their mutual colleagues to tarnish her reputation.

He then fled the scene, locking the door behind him and disposing of his blood-stained clothing and the murder weapon. He was eventually arrested after turning himself in to police in Hull the following day.
A “Shining Light” Extinguished
In a heart-wrenching victim impact statement, Stephanie’s mother described her daughter as a “compassionate and caring” soul who “lit up the room.”
”I have no words to say how broken I am,” she told the court as Adegbola sobbed in the dock. Judge Nirmal Shant KC echoed these sentiments during sentencing, noting that Stephanie’s only “fault” was having once loved the man who took her life.
Further Legal Action
The investigation continues to ripple outward. Nottinghamshire Police have recently charged 40-year-old Mary Onolunosen with assisting an offender in connection with the case. She is scheduled to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on March 6.
