Chief Olusegun Osoba Redirected Pilgrimage Sponsorship to Education and Infrastructure

Former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, has shed light on why he ended the state’s sponsorship of pilgrimages to Mecca and Jerusalem during his tenure between 1999 and 2003. In a recent address, Osoba revealed that the decision was driven by urgent educational and infrastructural needs that demanded immediate attention.

Upon assuming office in 1999, Osoba was troubled by the peeling state of public education. He recalled students carrying their desks from home and many gifted pupils unable to sit for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to unpaid fees. This inspired him to overhaul the allocation of public funds.

“Instead of channeling resources to sponsor Christian and Muslim pilgrimages, I chose to invest those funds into education. We started producing and distributing desks and chairs to schools statewide and covered WAEC examination fees for all final-year students, regardless of their parents’ financial capacity,” Osoba explained.

His administration also invested in vital public infrastructure including rural electrification projects, rural road construction, and the Abeokuta Hilltop housing estate. Osoba attributed these successes largely to the dedication of career civil servants, emphasizing that he did not bring outsiders into his government team.

Furthermore, Osoba urged contemporary Nigerian leaders to prioritize continuity in governance, highlighting that inconsistent policy implementation has hindered the nation’s development. He also encouraged Nigerians to embrace farming as a survival strategy and called on governors to invest more in agriculture to enhance food security.

The former governor’s remarks came during his investiture as Life Vice Patron of a prominent club in Abeokuta, where he was honored alongside corporate leader Chief Olusegun Osunkeye. The event featured laudatory tributes, including one from former UK High Commissioner Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, who described Osoba as a “colossus” and a steadfast public servant.

Osoba, an indigene deeply rooted in Egba and Abeokuta traditions, expressed profound gratitude for the recognition, pledging to continue contributing to his homeland’s progress.
