Courage Under Fire: NAF Pilots Execute Safe Ejection After Alpha Jet Failure

​Kainji, Nigeria — Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilots are being hailed as heroes for their extraordinary bravery and skill following an in-flight emergency that forced them to eject from an Alpha Jet fighter aircraft on Saturday, December 6, 2025.

​The incident occurred shortly after the aircraft took off from the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kainji, during what was described as a post-inspection functional check flight. The NAF confirmed that the jet developed a critical emergency, compelling the pilots to make a life-saving decision.

​Disaster Averted

​Crucially, before activating their ejection seats, the aircrew demonstrated remarkable composure and professionalism by expertly maneuvering the stricken aircraft away from densely populated civilian areas. This swift and selfless action prevented a potential catastrophe and averted any loss of life on the ground.

​Following their safe ejection, the pilots were immediately recovered by NAF Search and Rescue teams and are currently undergoing routine medical evaluation. The NAF has not released the names of the pilots involved.

​Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, publicly commended the pilots, praising their “courage, discipline and sound judgement.”

​”Their actions prevented the loss of life, which is a testament to the high standard of training and professionalism within the Nigerian Air Force,” Air Marshal Aneke stated.

​Investigation Launched

​In line with standard operational procedure, the CAS has directed the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry to thoroughly investigate the cause of the in-flight emergency.

​The NAF also extended its gratitude to the entire base support structure, including the Search and Rescue teams, Fire and Crash Response units, and medical personnel, for their prompt, coordinated, and highly professional response in securing the site and ensuring the crew’s wellbeing.

The NAF noted that the demands of airpower projection—including increased flying activities, complex missions, and sustained readiness—mean its personnel often operate in high-risk conditions to secure the nation.
