Segun Awolowo Jr: Dignified Final Rites Today ​

Lagos witnesses the poignant conclusion of rites for Olusegun “Segun” Awolowo Jr, the 62-year-old lawyer and public servant who died on November 20, 2025. Grandson of Nigeria’s iconic sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he leaves a legacy of dedicated service, including as the longest-serving Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021. The final farewell unfolds today, December 5, at Our Saviour’s Church in Ikoyi, where attendees don shades of blue to evoke calm and dignity.

Career Highlights

Awolowo’s professional path blended law and governance. After earning his LLB from Ogun State University and being called to the bar in 1989, he worked at firms like GOK Ajayi & Co. He served under Presidents Obasanjo and Yar’Adua in roles such as Special Assistant on Legal Matters and Secretary for Transport in the FCTA. His tenure at the Export Promotion Council marked him as a key promoter of Nigerian trade.

Tribute Program

The family curated a symbolic three-day farewell blending tradition and elegance. A Night of Tributes on December 1 at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, called for white or silver attire to honor purity, followed by a Wake-Keeping on December 3 in green shades for renewal and peace. Prominent figures gathered, sharing stories of his humility despite his storied lineage. ​

Tributes poured in from across Nigeria, with groups like the Oyo NUJ hailing him as a bridge-builder and reformer, while figures like Senator Dafinone called his passing a national loss of a rare patriot. His early education at institutions like Igbobi College and Government College Ibadan shaped a life of integrity echoing the Awolowo heritage. The events underscore a man who carried a legendary name with grace. ​
