EFCC, NFIU Launch Sweep on Alleged Coup Financiers

Military investigators working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) have launched a comprehensive crackdown on the alleged financiers of an attempted coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The probe involves forensic analysis of the bank accounts of accused military officers and civilians to trace financial flows linked to the conspiracy. This investigation follows revelations of an alleged transfer of N45 billion from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to individuals implicated in the plot.

Sixteen Nigerian military officers, including a brigadier general, colonel, several lieutenant colonels, majors, captains, a naval lieutenant commander, and an air force squadron leader, are under scrutiny for their alleged involvement. The officers are mainly from the Infantry Corps, with some from the Signals and Ordnance Corps. The investigation extends to their associates and business partners, with some suspects’ bank accounts reportedly frozen as part of the standard investigative procedure.

Notable developments include the raid on the Abuja residence of former Bayelsa State governor Timipre Sylva, whose younger brother and driver were detained, though Sylva denies any involvement. The plot allegedly involved plans to disrupt Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration and included a target to assassinate National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, with one accused officer recently posted to the National Counter Terrorism Centre. Military insiders suggest the plotters might have deeply penetrated the military hierarchy.

The EFCC and NFIU’s forensic investigation covers transaction analysis, fund origin tracking, and identifying the true owners of the bank accounts linked to the plot.
