Sisters Racing Led to Fatal Crash Killing 3 North Carolina High School Football Players

Two sisters, Destini Genwright, 19, and Dymond Monroe, 21, were involved in a racing incident on Rosehill Road in Fayetteville, North Carolina, which resulted in the death of three high school football players from E.E. Smith High School. The crash occurred on October 8, 2025, shortly after football practice, as the sisters were driving to their younger brother’s 18th birthday party along with several teammates riding with them.

Investigators revealed that Monroe’s Honda Civic, carrying the three football players, reportedly reached speeds of up to 92 mph before the fatal crash. Genwright’s car was traveling at 76 mph in a 45 mph zone. Video footage showed the sisters racing alongside each other with Monroe’s car at 73 mph and Genwright’s at 66 mph. According to court documents and a 911 call, Monroe’s car veered off the road, struck a telephone pole, and then a tree, resulting in the immediate deaths of the three passengers identified as 18-year-old Jai-Hyon Elliot and 17-year-olds Nicholas Williams and Trevor Merritt. Monroe was critically injured in the crash.

Both sisters face legal charges. Destini Genwright appeared in court, facing four misdemeanor charges: racing, speeding, reckless driving, and insurance violations. Monroe remains hospitalized and faces four misdemeanor charges and three felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. The crash has had a significant emotional impact on the Fayetteville community, including first responders, families, and teammates who honored the fallen students at funeral and tribute events.
