The Lagos State Government has responded with urgency to a widely circulated video on social media showing a group of students, allegedly from Excel College, Ejigbo, engaging in illicit activities such as smoking substances believed to be marijuana and consuming alcohol within a school dormitory.
The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MBSE), through its Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), has confirmed receipt of the video and initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident. An investigative team has been dispatched to verify the video’s authenticity, identify the students and school staff involved, and assess the extent of oversight failure at the institution.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the developments as deeply troubling, highlighting that such behavior directly contradicts the moral and disciplinary standards mandated in Lagos State’s educational system.
Preliminary consultations are underway with Excel College authorities to gather facts, after which the Lagos State Government has pledged to impose appropriate sanctions on any individuals or entities found responsible for enabling or neglecting such conduct.
The government reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare, discipline, and academic integrity of all students. As Lagos State maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance on actions undermining the ethical standards in both public and private schools, the investigation aims to send a strong message that delinquency will not be tolerated.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from the public, with calls for the swift and transparent administration of justice to prevent any negative consequence on the future of the students and the reputation of the state’s education sector.
Lagos State continues to prioritize creating safe, disciplined, and supportive learning environments that foster both academic excellence and sound moral values among youths.
