Wike to Commission Two Roads, Flag-Off 12 New Road and Solar Lighting Projects in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is set to launch a major wave of infrastructure development in Abuja starting Thursday, September 18, 2025. Over the coming month, from September 18 to October 16, 2025, the Minister will commission two newly completed roads and commence construction on 12 additional road projects, alongside the rollout of an ambitious solar street lighting initiative under the “Light Up Abuja Programme.”

According to a statement issued on Monday by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, the commissioning will include access roads in Sector Centre B, Dakibiyu District, and the newly constructed Esther Bali Street (ILS 11) and Kez Udezue Street (MAR 24) in Mabushi District.

The multi-phase Light Up Abuja Programme involves the installation of integrated solar-powered street lighting across critical districts and expressways. The project covers Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse, Central Business District (CBD), Airport Expressway, Katampe, Garki I and II, Mabushi, Gudu, Jabi, and Katampe Extension, aiming at improving safety and energy efficiency in the Federal Capital City.

Other significant road projects to be flagged off include the full development of Arterial Road N1 linking Wuye District to Ring Road II, construction of the Northern Parkway from Ring Road II to Ring Road III, and access roads to key public facilities and estates such as the Mabushi Bus Terminal, Renewed Hope Cities project in Karsana West, and a bypass road around the Airport Second Runway from Bill Clinton Drive to Tunga Madaki Settlement featuring a four-span bridge.

Further projects set for launch encompass erosion control and bridge construction in Kaura District, construction of transit way connections between Central Area and Wuse District, extension of Mohammed Isa Road in Asokoro, rehabilitation of a 15-kilometer stretch of the Old Keffi Road from Kado Village to Dei-Dei Junction, and engineering infrastructure development for outstanding layouts in Guzape.

Additional projects under the ministerial watch include new collector roads in Katampe district, and the design and construction of residences for the heads of key justice institutions including the President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judges of the Federal High Court and FCT, and the President of the Industrial Court.

These initiatives mark a continuation of Minister Wike’s vigorous campaign to overhaul Abuja’s infrastructure. About a month ago, Wike initiated the construction and expansion of water supply networks in satellite towns such as Bwari and Karu. Earlier in September, he also launched construction of a multi-purpose sports centre in Kafe District, a new magistrate court complex in Jabi District, and emergency road reconstruction in Karu.

The comprehensive infrastructure push — including roads, solar lighting, water supply, and public facilities — underscores the FCT administration’s commitment to improving urban living standards and fostering sustainable development in Nigeria’s capital territory.
