Lagos-based journalist and publisher of August24news.com, Mr. Ajagbe Adeyemi Teslim, is launching a landmark annual competition in 2026 to honor the best drivers and conductors in Lagos State. The initiative aims to improve the public transportation system’s image by rewarding hardworking, professional drivers and conductors who exhibit excellent conduct and customer service.
The competition, running from January to December 2026, will evaluate participants based on commuter commendations, scorecards, online public voting, and other criteria. Eligible candidates must demonstrate good character, respectable dress sense, skilled driving or conductorship, reasonable fare charges, and excellent communication with passengers. They must also comply with safety regulations, avoid corrupt practices, and present well-maintained vehicles. Drivers and conductors are expected to greet passengers warmly, refrain from smoking or drinking on duty, and assist passengers in need.

Winners of the Best Driver and Best Conductor awards will receive an impressive range of prizes including a brand new bus, private car, duplex house, 20 liters of free fuel daily for a month, ₦24 million cash, brand ambassador contracts, tours of notable Lagos locations, and automatic employment for two of their children. Additional rewards include designer attires, new tires, awards plaques, gala nights, and commendations from the Lagos State Government.
Ajagbe noted his motivation came from witnessing poor treatment of passengers and unprofessional behavior by some drivers and conductors. He emphasized that this award seeks to spotlight and encourage the many good professionals in the trade, promote accountability, and foster a more respectful and safer commuting environment in Lagos.
The project proposes a ₦1 billion budget and calls on the Lagos State government, corporate sponsors, and well-meaning Nigerians to support. Ajagbe stressed the competition is free for all registered union members in Lagos State and will collaborate closely with transport agencies, government bodies, and union branches.
Former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), praised the initiative as laudable and urged sponsors to back it fully.
This new award scheme aims to set higher standards in Lagos’s public transport by celebrating exemplary drivers and conductors and inspiring others to emulate their good example. The project promises to significantly enhance the safety, dignity, and experience of commuters on Lagos roads.
