Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared with confidence that he would defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election if he were to fly the flag of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC).
Amaechi, who served under the APC government before joining the ADC, made the bold statement during a conversation on X Spaces. He revealed his intimate knowledge of Tinubu’s strengths and weaknesses, asserting that this insight would give him the edge to unseat the incumbent president. He emphasized, “I’ve not had an election against Tinubu. I know him very well, and if allowed to fly the flag of ADC, I will defeat Tinubu for sure.”
In the same discourse, Amaechi strongly denied ever engaging in election rigging throughout his political career. He challenged any politician, living or dead, to produce evidence of his involvement in rigging, vowing to apologize if proven otherwise. He disclosed that despite appointments to various APC election planning committees, he refused to participate, citing knowledge of the corrupt activities discussed therein. Promising transparency, Amaechi said that if he wins the ADC ticket, he would expose these underhand dealings.
Addressing electoral integrity, Amaechi pledged never to engage in rigging and promised to put an end to electoral malpractice going forward. He criticized the notorious election result manipulations in Rivers State and lamented the alteration of votes in favour of Tinubu’s opponents, referencing that Peter Obi actually won in Rivers State during the 2023 elections, though the official results did not reflect this.
Amaechi vowed to fight the current government’s hardship-inducing policies, promising that the ADC would provide better governance to Nigerians and restore hope and smiles to their faces. He urged Nigerians, especially those in Rivers State, to register with the ADC to enable a political turnaround in 2027.
He also pledged to support whoever emerges as the ADC candidate through a free and fair primary and promised significant electoral reforms within his first six months if elected president. Furthermore, Amaechi signaled that corruption would be tackled head-on, pledging constitutional changes and a crackdown on graft.
Amaechi’s confident assertions and his outright rejection of rigging set the tone for an intense political contest ahead, marking him as a major contender and vocal critic of the current administration in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
This stance comes amid increasing calls for transparency and good governance in Nigeria, with Amaechi positioning himself as a reformer ready to challenge the status quo if given the mandate by the ADC and Nigerian voters.
