An operative of the Osun Amotekun Corps, identified as 35-year-old Peter Samuel Tope, was tragically killed following an alleged brutal assault by a soldier in Ijeda-Ijesa, Osun State, on Saturday evening.
According to a statement from the state Amotekun Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, the attack occurred around 5:45p.m. when a soldier, recently recruited into the Nigerian Army and identified as Opejobi Fiyinfoluwa, reportedly stopped Tope while he was riding a motorcycle and launched an unprovoked assault, striking him on the head with a blunt object. The attack, which reportedly lasted about 20 minutes without intervention, left Tope in a pool of blood.
Eyewitnesses say the soldier, dressed in military camouflage and accompanied by unidentified accomplices, fled the scene afterward on a commercial motorcycle. Other Corps operatives quickly evacuated Tope to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa and informed the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa. A formal report was also lodged with military authorities at Ede.
Despite medical efforts, Tope succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Sunday. The Corps Commander described the incident as unprovoked and has called for a thorough investigation, vowing that no stone will be left unturned to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
