Abeokuta, Ogun State – In a monumental step for Nigeria and West Africa, egusi melon seeds, proudly sourced from Oyo State, are set to embark on an unprecedented journey to the International Space Station (ISS). This groundbreaking mission marks the first time an agricultural product native to West Africa will reach space, and the first time any object from Nigeria will enter orbit.

The pioneering initiative is spearheaded by Dr. Temidayo Oniosun, a distinguished Nigerian space scientist and entrepreneur. He is collaborating with Jaguar Space and The Karman Project on this significant agricultural science mission. The egusi seeds will be launched alongside three other culturally vital crops: Egyptian cotton, Armenian pomegranate, and Pakistani wheat. This diverse selection forms part of a critical research endeavor focused on the future of food cultivation in extraterrestrial environments.

Titled “Emerging Space Nations: Space for Agriculture and Agriculture for Space,” the project aims to rigorously study how traditional seeds respond to the unique conditions of spaceflight. Scientists will meticulously observe the biological effects of microgravity and radiation, gathering invaluable data to enhance food production for long-duration space missions and to foster the development of more climate-resilient agriculture here on Earth.

Egusi was chosen to represent Nigeria due to its profound cultural and scientific relevance. This versatile seed is a cornerstone of Nigerian cuisine, a vital component of rural livelihoods, and a key contributor to food security across the nation. Sending it to space will draw global attention to its nutritional value and underscore the crucial role indigenous crops can play in addressing future agricultural challenges.

This groundbreaking mission also aligns seamlessly with Oyo State’s steadfast commitment to agricultural transformation, food security, and youth-driven innovation, championed by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration. From substantial agritech investments to robust rural development programs, the state has consistently championed sustainable agriculture as a powerful engine for economic growth. The inclusion of egusi, a crop extensively cultivated across Oyo, in a global space experiment highlights the state’s burgeoning potential to contribute meaningfully to both national development and international scientific advancements.

The project firmly places Nigeria at the forefront of emerging space research, showcasing a powerful synergy where traditional knowledge converges with modern science to tackle global challenges.

The seeds are scheduled for launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 31 at 12:09 PM local time (5:09 PM WAT). The precious cargo is expected to dock with the International Space Station on August 2 at approximately 3:00 PM US Eastern Time (8:00 PM WAT). Following a short stay in orbit, the return flight is anticipated to undock around August 5 or 6, with splashdown planned for August 6 or 7.

About Dr. Temidayo Oniosun: A Visionary Connecting Roots to Orbit
Dr. Temidayo Oniosun, a Nigerian space scientist and entrepreneur, is the founder of Space in Africa, a leading consulting and research firm in the space industry. His work is instrumental in shaping Africa’s growing influence in the global space economy.

Born in Okaka, Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, Dr. Oniosun has rapidly become a prominent figure in the international space community. Beyond leading Space in Africa, he is a research affiliate at MIT Media Lab and has collaborated with esteemed organizations such as the African Union, European Commission, and NASA. He currently serves on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Space Technologies.

Despite his extensive international reach, Dr. Oniosun remains deeply committed to his roots. In 2023, he funded a fully equipped ICT center in his hometown, providing satellite-powered internet and digital training to hundreds of young people. Through educational sponsorships, strategic startup investments, and frontier research, he continues to build both opportunity and vital infrastructure in Oyo State. With the Egusi-to-Space mission, he is not only carrying Nigerian culture into orbit but also firmly positioning Oyo State on the global map of innovation and scientific achievement.
