Abuja, Nigeria – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reportedly introduced new, stringent visa restrictions for Nigerian travelers, including a ban on transit visa applications and stricter conditions for tourist visas. These directives, communicated to travel agents on Tuesday, mark a significant tightening of entry requirements, coming just over a year after a two-year visa ban on Nigerians by UAE authorities was ostensibly resolved.
According to reports, the latest rules stipulate that any Nigerian national aged between 18 and 45 is now ineligible for a tourist visa unless accompanied. This move aims to curb instances of visa overstay and potential irregular migration.
Furthermore, direct communication from Dubai immigration to travel agents confirms that applications for transit visas are no longer being processed for Nigerian nationals. The new notification explicitly states, “For Nigeria nationals, please bear in mind that an applicant aged 18 to 45 years travelling alone is not eligible for TOURIST VISA CATEGORY.”
For applicants aged 45 years or above, new financial requirements have been introduced. They must now provide a single Nigerian personal bank statement covering the last six months, with each month’s end balance reflecting a minimum of USD 10,000 or its naira equivalent.
Travel agents are advised to consider these points alongside existing documentation such as hotel reservations and passport data pages before submitting applications. This development follows the much-publicized lifting of a two-year visa ban in late 2023, a resolution that was expected to normalize travel between Nigeria and the UAE. However, even the lifting of that ban came with various stringent conditions that limited the number of Nigerians able to travel to the Emirates.
Travel agents express concern that the situation is poised to worsen in the coming days, anticipating further challenges following this review of the visa process for Nigerian citizens. The new restrictions are expected to significantly impact business, tourism, and family visits for many Nigerians intending to travel to the UAE.
