Escalation: Iran and Israel Trade Deadly Blows in Widening Conflict

TEHRAN/TEL AVIV –The simmering tensions between Iran and Israel erupted into a full-scale, multi-front conflict today as both nations launched deadly strikes, escalating fears of an all-out regional war.

Israel initiated an expanded assault on Iran, specifically targeting its energy industry and Defence Ministry headquarters in Tehran. In immediate retaliation, Iran unleashed a fresh barrage of missiles, causing widespread casualties across Israel.

New explosions rocked Tehran as Israeli strikes hit critical infrastructure, including the Defence Ministry headquarters and sites alleged to be linked to Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program.

Simultaneously, Iranian missiles penetrated Israeli airspace, causing deaths and injuries. Israeli emergency officials confirmed at least 10 fatalities across the country, including four in an apartment building in the Galilee region, and three in central Israel: an 80-year-old woman, a 69-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old boy. Casualty figures from Iran were not immediately available, though Iran’s UN ambassador previously stated that 78 people were killed and over 320 wounded in Israeli strikes on June 13. Israel claims its strikes have killed a number of top generals, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Hossein Salami, and at least nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard asserted that its latest missile strikes specifically targeted fuel production facilities for Israeli fighter jets, a claim not yet acknowledged by Israel. Both nations’ militaries and state media confirmed the ongoing missile exchanges as explosions continued to be heard near midnight.

The escalating violence has led to the immediate cancellation of planned negotiations between Iran and the United States concerning Tehran’s nuclear program, throwing into question any diplomatic resolution to the conflict. Oman, a key mediator, confirmed the sixth round of US-Iran indirect talks would not take place. A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed continued commitment to talks and hope for a swift resumption.

World leaders have voiced urgent calls for de-escalation, warning against the catastrophic consequences of all-out war. China’s foreign minister emphasized that the attack on nuclear sites sets a “dangerous precedent.” The region remains on edge, already grappling with Israel’s ongoing efforts to eliminate the Iranian-backed militant group Hamas in Gaza after 20 months of fighting.

“Tehran is burning,” declared Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz on social media, underscoring the severity of the situation. Israel’s military cabinet met as the latest round of Iranian missiles hit.

The extensive Israeli strikes across Iran have presented Tehran’s surviving leadership with a critical decision: whether to plunge deeper into conflict with Israel’s more powerful forces or seek a diplomatic off-ramp.

Amidst the chaos, Israel’s main international airport announced its closure until further notice. First responders were actively searching for survivors and clearing debris from missile strikes, including one that hit a neighborhood outside Tel Aviv early this morning.

US President Donald Trump distanced the US from the initial Israeli attack, stating the US had “nothing to do with the attack on Iran.” However, he issued a stern warning to Tehran against targeting US interests, asserting that “If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.” Despite this, Trump also expressed optimism for a swift resolution: “However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!”
