Morufudeen Idowu, a 52-year-old man recently returned from Canada, has been sentenced to three months imprisonment for assaulting a Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) official at Ojota. The incident occurred when Idowu was stopped by the KAI officer from illegally crossing the Ojota expressway, a violation of Lagos State pedestrian safety laws.
Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that Idowu refused lawful arrest and physically attacked the government official during routine enforcement aimed at discouraging dangerous road crossing. Following his arrest, Idowu was arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Oshodi and sentenced accordingly.
The assault took place near the Ojota pedestrian bridge, a known hotspot for pedestrian accidents, where KAI officers regularly enforce compliance to protect public safety. Wahab emphasized that the government will not tolerate aggression against officials performing their duties and that the law applies equally to all, regardless of status.
The case has sparked public reactions on social media, with many Nigerians supporting the court’s decision and underscoring the importance of obeying traffic and pedestrian laws to prevent accidents.
This sentencing serves as a stern warning against illegal expressway crossing and assault on law enforcement personnel in Lagos State.
