Abuja, Nigeria – Hon. Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, a towering figure in Nigeria’s judiciary and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, passed away in the early hours of Friday at the age of 88. His death marks the end of an era for the legal community and the nation as a whole.
Justice Uwais, who led the Supreme Court of Nigeria as Chief Justice from 1995 to 2006, was renowned for his erudition, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice. His tenure at the apex court coincided with significant periods in Nigeria’s political and legal history, during which he consistently upheld the rule of law and contributed significantly to the development of the country’s jurisprudence.
Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Justice Uwais’s illustrious legal career spanned several decades. He began his journey in the legal profession after obtaining his law degree from the University of Cambridge, England, in 1962. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple, London, in 1963.
Upon his return to Nigeria, Justice Uwais served in various capacities, including as a pupil state counsel and later as a judge of the High Court of North Central State (now Kaduna State) in 1974. His ascent through the judicial ranks was steady and merited, culminating in his appointment as a Justice of the Court of Appeal in 1977 and subsequently to the Supreme Court in 1980.
Throughout his career, Justice Uwais presided over numerous landmark cases that shaped Nigeria’s legal landscape. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail, his profound understanding of the law, and his ability to deliver clear and well-reasoned judgments. Beyond his judicial pronouncements, he was also a respected mentor to many in the legal profession, known for his humility and approachable demeanor.
