Australia Begins Massive Cleanup as Flood Death Toll Rises to Five, Thousands Stranded

SYDNEY, Australia – Australia has commenced a massive cleanup operation across its eastern states today, as record-breaking floods, which have claimed at least five lives, begin to recede. Despite easing conditions, hundreds of residents remain in evacuation centers, with emergency services conducting 52 rescues overnight.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the start of the recovery efforts, stating that federal, state, and local governments are working closely to provide immediate and long-term support. Damage assessments are now underway in the hardest-hit coastal regions of New South Wales (NSW), where authorities estimate at least 10,000 properties have been damaged, with some completely destroyed.

The latest confirmed fatality is a man in his 80s, whose body was discovered at a flooded property approximately 50km from Taree, one of the towns most severely impacted by the deluge. This brings the confirmed death toll to five across eastern Australia. Other confirmed fatalities include a man in his late 70s whose vehicle was swept off a causeway near Coffs Harbour, a 63-year-old farmer who died while trying to protect his livestock in Moto, a woman found in her submerged car near Kempsey, and a man near Dungog. Prime Minister Albanese, who was forced to cancel a visit to Taree on Friday due to impassable floodwaters, expressed his sorrow, remarking, “It’s awful to hear the news of more loss of life.”

At the peak of the flooding, an estimated 50,000 people were isolated across Australia’s most populous state, with roads submerged and communities cut off. The powerful storm system, which dumped months’ worth of rain in just three days, left coastal areas littered with debris and deceased animals.

The widespread disruption also impacted transportation, with train services, including those to Sydney Airport, affected by flooded tracks. Sydney Airport temporarily shut two of its three runways for an hour on Friday morning, leading to flight delays.

The recent floods are the latest in a series of extreme weather events to hit Australia in recent years, which experts increasingly link to climate change. The country has experienced frequent and devastating flooding since early 2021, following a period of severe droughts and bushfires at the end of the last decade. The focus now turns to recovery and rebuilding, as communities grapple with the immense scale of the damage.
