DAKAR/OUAGADOUGOU – In a significant step towards bolstering regional security, Senegal and Burkina Faso have launched a joint initiative aimed at combating terrorism and transnational crime in the volatile Sahel region. While specific details of direct joint military operations remain largely undisclosed, this strategic pact underscores a growing commitment to collaborative efforts in the face of escalating threats.

The partnership highlights a crucial alignment of interests between the two West African nations, both deeply impacted by the surge in terrorist activity across the Sahel. Burkina Faso, in particular, has borne a heavy brunt, consistently ranking among the most severely impacted countries by terrorism globally.

Although Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger recently announced their intention to leave ECOWAS and form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the underlying need for regional security cooperation remains a shared concern.

2.Sahel Region Initiatives and Legal Frameworks: Both countries, alongside Niger and others in the Sahel, have been actively revising their penal codes and establishing specialized courts and investigators to enhance counterterrorism efforts.
