Oyo Police Investigate Fatal Shooting Of 14 Years Old During Chase

Ibadan,Oyo State –A joint traffic enforcement operation by the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) and the Oyo State Police Command tragically resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, yesterday morning. The incident, which occurred along the Airport Roundabout, Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road in Egbeda Local Government Area, has prompted a full investigation by the police authorities.

According to a press release issued by the Oyo State Police Command, the fatal incident unfolded at approximately 7:45 AM on Tuesday, May 20th, 2025. An enforcement team attempted to stop a black Honda Accord, bearing LAGOS registration number FST 639 JJ, which was being driven against traffic (one-way) by Mr. Odunayo Alade, the father of the deceased.

Instead of complying with the lawful directives, the driver allegedly accelerated, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck in an attempt to evade arrest.

Authorities stated that barricades were subsequently set up to immobilize the fleeing vehicle and prevent further damage or harm to officers and other road users. However, the driver reportedly broke through these barricades, continuing his reckless driving and endangering lives.

Given the driver’s persistent evasion and dangerous conduct, officers suspected potential criminal activity or even a case of abduction. A police chase ensued. In an attempt to immobilize the vehicle, a police corporal discharged a firearm, reportedly aiming for the tyres.

Tragically, the bullet missed its intended target and struck Kehinde Alade, who was seated in the rear seat behind the driver. The young boy was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

In response to the incident and to avert any potential threat to public peace, the Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Adenola, swiftly deployed tactical and intelligence units, including the Police Mobile Force (PMF), to the scene and other strategic locations across Ibadan. This quick intervention, according to the Command, helped restore calm and ensured public safety, allowing normal activities to resume.

Commissioner Adenola has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, which will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The police corporal who discharged the firearm has been taken into custody along with other members of the enforcement team, and they are reportedly cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. The Command has assured the public of a transparent process and that the findings will be made public.

The Oyo State Police Command extended its deepest condolences to the family of Kehinde Alade, reaffirming its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring accountability. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
