Lagos, Nigeria – In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the arrest of 120 individuals suspected of internet fraud, locally known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” in a coordinated operation across various locations in Lagos State.

The EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 executed the arrests on Monday, May 19, 2025, following credible intelligence and extensive surveillance, according to a statement released by the anti-graft agency. The suspects comprise 95 males and 25 females.
During the operation, the EFCC operatives recovered a substantial number of items believed to be proceeds and tools of their alleged criminal activities. These include 26 exotic vehicles, expensive jewelry, numerous smartphones, laptops, and a cache of incriminating documents.
Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, stated that the suspects are currently undergoing further investigation and forensic analysis. He assured the public that they would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigations.
This latest operation underscores the EFCC’s sustained efforts to combat the growing menace of internet fraud in Nigeria, which has not only led to significant financial losses for victims globally but has also negatively impacted the nation’s international reputation. Cybercrime in Nigeria often involves various schemes such as phishing, romance scams, and business email compromise.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to eradicating economic and financial crimes and has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their communities.
