VATICAN CITY – As the Catholic Church anticipates the pivotal 2025 papal conclave, the spotlight naturally falls on the College of Cardinals, particularly its most senior members eligible to vote. Church law, established by Pope Paul VI and reaffirmed by Pope John Paul II, limits voting to cardinals under the age of 80. Among the 134 cardinal-electors preparing for this historic gathering, five distinguished figures, all currently 79 years old and hailing from five different continents, stand out for their extensive experience and diverse perspectives.

These “senior shepherds” – Carlos Osoro Sierra (Spain), Robert Sarah (Guinea), Stanisław Ryłko (Poland), Joseph Coutts (Pakistan), and Timothy Radcliffe (England) – each bring decades of dedicated service and unique insights to the deliberations that will determine the next leader of the global Catholic community.

The significance of their age lies not just in their proximity to the voting age limit, but in the wealth of wisdom accumulated through years of ministry and leadership within the Church. Originally, 15 cardinals were 79, but the recent withdrawal of Cardinal Antonio Cañizares of Spain due to health reasons has reduced the number of electors to 134. These five oldest voting cardinals are expected to play a crucial role in the discussions and discernment process.

A Closer Look at the Influential Elders:

* Carlos Osoro Sierra (Spain): The retired Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Osoro Sierra, born on May 16, 1945, is widely respected for his approachable pastoral style and unwavering commitment to Catholic education. His episcopal motto, “Per Christum et cum ipso et in ipso” (“Through him and with him and in him”), encapsulates his deep faith. Having previously led dioceses in Valencia and Oviedo, his extensive experience in shepherding diverse communities will undoubtedly inform his contributions to the conclave.

* Robert Sarah (Guinea): Born on June 15, 1945, Cardinal Sarah, the former Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, has been a prominent figure in the Vatican under three different popes. Known for his strong advocacy for traditional liturgy, he ascended to the rank of archbishop at a young age of 34. His long and influential career in the Holy See has led some to consider him a potential candidate for the papacy.

* Stanisław Ryłko (Poland): A longtime Vatican official born on July 4, 1945, Cardinal Ryłko served as the head of the Pontifical Council for the Laity for many years and was a close collaborator of Pope John Paul II. He played a significant role in shaping initiatives related to lay ministry within the Church. Elevated to the cardinalate by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007, his deep understanding of the workings of the Vatican and his connection to a significant papacy bring valuable historical perspective.

* Joseph Coutts (Pakistan): Born on July 21, 1945, Cardinal Coutts holds the distinction of being only the second cardinal from Pakistan. The former Archbishop of Karachi is highly regarded for his steadfast commitment to interfaith dialogue. His presence at the historic signing of the Document on Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi in 2019 underscores his dedication to building bridges between faiths. His unique perspective from the Asian continent will be vital in the conclave’s deliberations.

* Timothy Radcliffe (England): Born on August 22, 1945, Cardinal Radcliffe is a renowned theologian and a former Master of the Dominican Order. His global preaching ministry and profound spiritual insights have made him a respected voice within the Church. Notably, Pope Francis recently entrusted him with leading the spiritual meditations for the ongoing Synod on Synodality, highlighting his continued influence and spiritual leadership.

As the Catholic Church approaches this significant moment of transition, these five senior cardinals stand as pillars of experience and continuity. Their collective wisdom, shaped by decades of service across diverse cultures and challenges, will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the sacred task of electing the next successor to St. Peter. Their insights and discernment will be instrumental in shaping the future direction of the Catholic faith for millions worldwide.
