We Will Govern As A ‘Changed’ Labour Party. “Country First, Party Second” — UK PM, Starmer

New UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer has promised to begin his work of change immediately, stating that he is committed to working decisively to ensure the people get the change they voted for.

Starmer stated this in his first speech as Prime Minister, outside No 10 Downing Street on Friday.

He said, “Our country has voted decisively for change. Changing a country is not like flicking a switch” as he acknowledges the world “is more volatile”.

“It will take a while,” he adds but says work to change will begin immediately.

“Our country has voted for change. Now our country has voted decisively for change and a return of politics to public service,” he said.

Appreciating the efforts of former PM, Rishi Sunak, he said his achievement as the first British Asian PM of this country should not be “underestimated by anyone”.

He also recognised the hard work Sunak brought to his leadership.

Starmer promised to “rebuild” the country’s “infrastructure of opportunity… brick by brick.” Stating that there is a need for schools and affordable homes, things that “working class families like mine can build their lives around”.

He said a gap that’s grown between people and politicians has led to “weariness in the heart of a nation, a draining away of the hope, the spirit, the belief in a better future.

“This wound, this lack of trust can only be healed by actions not words – I know that, but we can make a start today with a simple acknowledgement that public service is a privilege and your government should treat every single person in the country with respect.

“Whether you voted Labour or not – in fact especially if you did not – I say to you directly my government will serve you.

“Politics can be a force for good. We will show that. We have changed the Labour Party, and returned it to service – that is how we will govern.

“With respect and humility, I invite you all to join this govt of service in the mission of national renewal. Our work is urgent and we begin it today.

“Country first, party second.”
