On Friday in Osogbo, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, declared that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State is facing significant challenges due to a series of defections.
Oyetola, the immediate past governor of Osun State, made this statement during a rally organized to welcome Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun, a former PDP National Deputy Chairman, and Mr. Dotun Babayemi, a former governorship aspirant on the PDP platform, along with their supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Oyetola expressed confidence in the APC’s prospects in the next governorship election, interpreting the defections as a sign that more members from the PDP would join the APC before the 2026 gubernatorial poll.
He remarked, “It is an irony that we lost an election over a year ago and there has been no major defection from the party. What we have is the reverse. It is the ruling party that is coming to us, which shows that APC remains a party to beat.”

He highlighted the effective governance of APC leaders, including President Tinubu, and suggested that their approach to governance was attracting new members.
Oyetola welcomed Babayemi and Oyedokun, noting their significance and experience, which he believes demonstrate the decline of the PDP in Osun.
Mr. Dotun Babayemi also spoke at the event, criticizing the current governance under Governor Ademola Adeleke and calling for unity to remove the present administration for the state’s development.
He stated, “The last time we witnessed good governance was in 2022 when Oyetola left government, and it is time we unite to send the present administration out of government house for the sake of the state’s development.”
In response, Osun PDP chairman Sunday Bisi described the defections as a “drama by the opposition APC to shore up its bad fortunes in Osun State.”
The PDP statement urged the people of Osun not to be concerned about the defections, describing them as the actions of political opportunists whose influence had waned before the 2022 governorship election.
The party emphasized that individuals like Babayemi had already been marginalized within the PDP well before the recent defections.
