Murtala Muhammed Airport witnessed a chaotic morning on Thursday as thick smoke billowed around the E54 passenger bridge at the E wing axis, escalating into a fire outbreak.
The incident prompted the diversion of all flight operations to the D Wing terminal as firemen from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) battled to contain the situation.
The fire, which broke out around 05:29 hours, led to the immediate shutdown of power to the entire E wing as a safety measure. FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiagelo Orah, confirmed the incident in a statement, attributing the initial suspicion to sparks from an electrical unit.

Responding swiftly, the airport’s rescue and fire fighting services team arrived at the scene by 04:30 hours. Despite the rigorous efforts, the fire was brought under control by 06:49 hours.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, all flight operations in Terminal one remain diverted to the D wing terminal.
The recurrence of fire outbreaks at the airport has raised concerns among stakeholders, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures.
