Security forces in Lagos State have dismantled a major vandalism ring operating beneath the newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija along the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway, arresting 27 suspects in a midnight sting operation.
The arrests follow the discovery of systematic structural sabotage by suspected hoodlums who stripped away critical iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and supporting materials from the bridge’s pillars. Authorities warn that the targeted stripping of these foundational components poses an immediate and severe threat to the structural integrity of the infrastructure, jeopardizing the safety of thousands of daily motorists and pedestrians.
The crackdown was spearheaded by a joint midnight enforcement team comprising operatives of the Rapid Response Squad and the Kick Against Indiscipline task force. The operation directly aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s ongoing mandate to rid the transnational highway of environmental infractions, illegal trading, and criminal sanctuaries that compromise public assets.
State officials confirmed that all 27 detained suspects are currently facing formal charges and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the Lagos State laws governing the protection of public property. The government has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on infrastructure sabotage, vowing to intensify surveillance and enforcement across major developmental corridors to safeguard public investments.
