DUBAI, UAE — A 23-year-old British TikTok creator and former department store worker is facing the terrifying prospect of execution by a firing squad in the United Arab Emirates after being charged with the premeditated murder of her boyfriend.

Brooke George, from Gravesend, Kent, is currently being held in the notorious Bur Dubai Police Station following her arrest on June 22. Legal advocacy group Detained in Dubai has launched an urgent appeal on her behalf, strongly asserting that she acted in self-defence during a brutal domestic assault and should be treated as a victim of violence rather than a murderer.

An Online Romance Turned Nightmare

Before finding online fame for her makeup tutorials and lip-sync videos, Ms. George worked at the premium British retail chain John Lewis. Her life took a dramatic turn after she met a 26-year-old British man on Facebook.

Following a whirlwind online romance, she travelled to Dubai to visit him. While her initial week-long trip was described by family as “the time of her life,” her second trip quickly spiralled into a controlling nightmare. Family and friends report that the partner’s behaviour changed drastically, alleging that he withheld her passport, booked her a one-way ticket to prevent her from leaving, and became increasingly abusive.

The Fatal Encounter

The situation peaked following an evening out at McCafferty’s Irish Bar in Jumeirah Village. According to reports, the boyfriend became heavily intoxicated and assaulted Ms. George in a vehicle before continuing the attack back at their apartment.

Panicked and desperately seeking to escape, Ms. George contacted her family in the UK and arranged a flight home with the help of friends. She returned to the flat solely to retrieve her passport. Her family alleges that she was crying and begging for her travel documents when she was punched heavily in the face and violently attacked. Fearing for her life, she reached for a kitchen knife within her grasp and struck him.

The suspect left the apartment in a severe state of shock and was stopped by authorities at Dubai International Airport with visible facial swelling, bruising, and injuries.

Fears of Custodial Abuse and Diplomatic Intervention

Legal rights advocates have raised deep concerns over Ms. George’s treatment within the Gulf state’s judicial system. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, revealed that the young influencer has been forced to make statements without a lawyer, denied direct access to her embassy, and subjected to humiliating treatment.

”Miss George has been forced to strip naked in front of male officers, without any female officers present,” Stirling stated, describing the ordeal as deeply distressing. “The UAE has a well-documented history of criminalising and re-victimising women who report violence. Rather than treating Brooke solely as a murder suspect, investigators must examine her being the victim of serious violence.”

The prison where she is being held—Bur Dubai Police Station—has previously faced heavy international scrutiny following the high-profile 2011 custody death of British tourist Lee Bradley Brown.

Back in the UK, the influencer’s mother, Thereza George, expressed absolute terror over her daughter’s plight. “When I spoke to Brooke right after the incident, she was absolutely terrified. I could see that one of her eyes was badly swollen and was beginning to close. I firmly believe she was desperately trying to get home.”

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it is monitoring the high-stakes legal battle. An FCDO spokesperson stated: “We are in touch with a British woman detained in the UAE, we are supporting her family, and we are in contact with the local authorities.” Under stringent UAE laws, a conviction for premeditated murder carries a mandatory death sentence, usually executed by firing squad.
