The 2027 election season has officially entered another important phase. With the Independent National Electoral Commission opening the campaign period for the presidential and National Assembly elections, Nigeria is once again moving into familiar political territory.

The rallies will come. The posters will multiply. The endorsements will begin to fly.

Political parties will unveil manifestos. Candidates will make promises. Supporters will fill social media with arguments, statistics, memes and, occasionally, facts.

And somewhere between the campaign songs and political speeches, Nigerians will be asked to make one of the most consequential decisions they can make as citizens.

Who deserves their vote?

That is where the real story begins. The Campaigns Have Begun

INEC’s opening of the campaign period gives political parties and candidates the opportunity to formally take their messages to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election.

For politicians, it is time to persuade.

For voters, it should be time to interrogate.

Every candidate will have a story to tell. Every party will have a reason why it deserves power. Every campaign will present its candidate as the answer to Nigeria’s problems.

That is politics. The responsibility of the voter, however, is to separate the campaign from the candidate.

A good speech does not automatically make a good leader. A massive rally does not prove competence. A celebrity endorsement does not constitute a manifesto.

And a viral video is certainly not a substitute for a record of performance.

Then There Is the Money

Campaign financing will inevitably dominate the conversation. Presidential candidates can spend up to ₦10 billion under Nigeria’s electoral spending limits, while governorship candidates face a ₦3 billion ceiling under the applicable electoral framework.

Those are enormous sums. But the concern should not simply be how much money politicians spend to campaign.

The bigger question is what happens when money begins to determine how citizens vote.

Campaigns require legitimate spending. Candidates need to travel. They need to communicate their programmes. They need advertising, logistics, personnel and campaign offices.

None of that is inherently wrong. The danger begins when political spending crosses into buying political loyalty.

Please, Don’t Sell Four Years for One Day

Election season can make politicians suddenly very generous. A rally appears. Music starts playing. Food arrives. Transport money appears. A few envelopes circulate. Everybody is happy.

Then the politician leaves. The money disappears.

And the consequences of the election remain.

This is where voters need to think beyond the moment. If someone gives you ₦10,000 to vote for them, ask yourself what that ₦10,000 is worth compared with four years of governance.

What happens if the roads deteriorate?

What happens if healthcare fails? What happens if schools suffer? What happens if unemployment rises? What happens if insecurity worsens? What happens if public money is mismanaged?

The price of poor leadership is usually far greater than whatever anyone gives you at a campaign rally.

Your vote is worth more than an envelope.

The Next Battle Will Be Fought Online

Money will not be the only challenge.

Information will be another.

The 2027 election will take place in an environment where a political claim can travel from one person’s phone to millions of Nigerians within minutes.

An old video can suddenly become “breaking news.”

A manipulated photograph can become evidence.

A fabricated quotation can be attributed to a candidate.

A genuine statement can be deliberately taken out of context.

And by the time the truth catches up, the falsehood may already have done its damage.

This means Nigerian voters must become more difficult to deceive.

Before forwarding that explosive political message, ask: Who published it? When was it published? Where did the information originate? Is there an official statement?

Are credible news organisations reporting it?Does the video actually show what the caption claims?

If you cannot answer those questions, perhaps the best thing to do is not forward it. Not every message needs your thumb.

Competence Must Matter

Perhaps the most important question of the 2027 election should be competence. Not tribe. Not religion. Not party colour. Not social media popularity. Not the size of the candidate’s convoy. Not how entertaining the campaign rally looks.

Competence. What has the candidate done before? What responsibilities have they handled? What do they understand about Nigeria’s economy? What is their position on education? What is their plan for healthcare? How will they address insecurity? What is their approach to unemployment? What do they understand about infrastructure? Who are the people around them? What is their record when there were no cameras?

These questions may not produce the most exciting campaign videos.

But they can produce better voters. And better voters are necessary for better government.

Democracy Is Not Entertainment

Nigerians have become very good at political commentary. We analyse politicians on television. We fight over them on Facebook. We abuse them on X. We defend them on WhatsApp. We create hashtags. We produce memes. We predict election results before voting begins.

But democracy is not a spectator sport. At some point, the talking must become participation.

The voter must register where necessary. The voter must collect their Permanent Voter’s Card where applicable. The voter must understand the electoral process. The voter must verify information. The voter must turn up.

And most importantly, the voter must make an informed choice.

The Election Will Test More Than Politicians

The 2027 election will test INEC. It will test political parties. It will test candidates. It will test security agencies. It will test the media.

But it will also test ordinary Nigerians. Will we reject vote buying? Will we challenge misinformation? Will we examine candidates beyond party labels? Will we demand accountability? Will we respect the electoral process even when our preferred candidate loses?

That last question matters. A credible election is not an election in which your candidate wins. A credible election is one whose process commands confidence even when the result disappoints you.

Expect the Noise

From now until the election, Nigerians should prepare themselves. There will be promises. There will be endorsements. There will be defections. There will be counter-defections.

There will be political mathematics that somehow makes every candidate look unbeatable. There will be rallies with enough speakers to make you wonder whether anyone actually came to hear the manifesto.

There will be slogans. There will be songs. There will be campaign merchandise. There will be arguments.

And, unfortunately, there will probably be misinformation. But underneath all that noise is a serious democratic responsibility. We are not merely choosing people to occupy offices. We are choosing the people who will exercise public power on our behalf.

That deserves more than excitement. It deserves scrutiny. The Campaign Belongs to Politicians. The Election Belongs to Voters. INEC has opened the campaign season. The political marathon has begun.

The politicians now have their stage. They will make their promises. They will ask for our support. They will tell us why they are different.

Our responsibility is to listen. But listening is not believing. We must question. We must compare. We must verify. We must examine records. We must look beyond the campaign posters and ask what each candidate has to offer Nigeria.

Most importantly, we must remember that the election does not end when the votes are counted.

That is when the consequences begin. The campaign season belongs to the politicians. The election belongs to the voters.

And the future belongs to all of us.

ValidViewNetwork reports that INEC’s opening of the campaign period marks another significant step towards the 2027 general election.

ValidViewNetwork reports that as political parties and candidates prepare to intensify their campaigns, Nigerian voters face an equally important responsibility: to reject vote buying, verify information and make choices based on competence and credible records.
