ABUJA — A brazen daylight car theft in the heart of Abuja came to a swift halt when operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command tracked and recovered a stolen 2014 Toyota Hilux in Kaduna State, just two hours after it was driven away.
The successful cross-border operation also led to the arrest of a suspected member of an interstate car-snatching syndicate.
The Four-Minute Vanishing Act
The incident began on Saturday afternoon, June 20, 2026, in the bustling Wuse II district of the FCT. According to police reports, the vehicle’s owner parked the white Toyota Hilux (Registration Number: BWR 712 CV) at approximately 1:30 p.m.
In what appeared to be a meticulously timed operation, the owner returned a mere four minutes later—at 1:34 p.m.—only to find the parking space empty. Eyewitnesses at the scene later confirmed seeing an unidentified individual hurriedly driving the utility vehicle away.
Cross-Border Interception
A distress call was placed at 1:45 p.m. to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Maitama Division, CSP Altine Daniel. Recognizing the high probability of the thief fleeing the capital city, CSP Daniel immediately mobilized a tactical team to the crime scene while simultaneously activating a network-wide alert.
Police formations and border patrol teams stationed along all entry and exit arteries of the FCT were ordered to conduct emergency stop-and-search operations to prevent the vehicle from crossing territory lines.
However, the criminal managed to slip past the immediate perimeter, prompting the police to deploy digital tracking technology.
Cornered in Kaduna
The electronic dragnet paid off. At exactly 3:30 p.m.—exactly one hour and forty-five minutes after the theft was officially reported—the signal pinned the Hilux down in Kubacha village, located within the Kagarko Local Government Area of neighboring Kaduna State.
FCT operatives, coordinating with local intelligence, swooped in on the location, recovering the vehicle intact and arresting one suspect caught in possession of the stolen truck.
Confirming the breakthrough on Friday, June 26, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that both the suspect and the vehicle have been transferred back to Abuja.

”The suspect and the recovered vehicle are currently in police custody,” SP Adeh said. “Investigations are aggressively ongoing to uncover the full extent of this network and to track down possible accomplices who may have aided the theft or monitored the vehicle’s owner.”
A Call for High-Tech Vigilance
Reacting to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police commended the Maitama Division for their rapid response but issued a stern advisory to Abuja residents regarding vehicle security.
The Commissioner emphasized that the quick recovery was heavily reliant on technological tracking, urging car owners to proactively install functional electronic tracking devices in their vehicles.
