116 Years On, King’s College Battles Fresh Threat to Its Future

King’s College, Lagos, is more than a school.

Founded in 1909, the institution has spent 116 years producing generations of Nigerians who have gone into politics, business, academia, law, medicine, the military and public service.

Now, one of Nigeria’s oldest secondary schools is at the centre of a dispute over who should manage its future.

The Federal Government has concluded a concession arrangement handing the management of King’s College to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association, KCOBA.

The government says the arrangement is intended to improve the school.

But the development has met resistance from staff and parents.

The school was shut by its staff union after the Federal Government directed that the handover should begin.

The dispute has also created uncertainty around the planned resumption of students.

And that is where the argument becomes bigger than King’s College.

Rescue or Loss of Public Control?

There are two competing ideas here.

The first is straightforward.If government institutions have suffered from poor maintenance, weak funding and declining infrastructure, why should government reject private or alumni investment that could revive them?

King’s College Old Boys’ Association has deep emotional and institutional ties to the school.

Supporters of the concession argue that this connection can be turned into long-term investment.

The second question is more difficult.

If a public school is handed to a private association, even under a concession arrangement, what happens to public accountability?

Who ultimately decides what the school becomes?

Who protects access?

Who determines fees?

Who supervises the management?

And what happens when the interests of government, alumni, parents and students no longer align?

These questions deserve answers before the dispute becomes another Nigerian argument in which everyone speaks but nobody explains the contract.

Why King’s College Matters

King’s College has survived colonial rule, independence, military governments, democratic governments and generations of educational reforms.

Its value is therefore not simply in its classrooms.

It is part of Nigeria’s institutional memory.

That is why any change in its management naturally attracts attention.

Nigeria has repeatedly watched public institutions deteriorate because government failed to maintain them.

But the answer to government failure should not automatically be a system where public institutions gradually leave public control without adequate scrutiny.

The challenge is finding the balance.

If KCOBA can provide better infrastructure, stronger management and improved learning without undermining the school’s public character, the arrangement could become a model.

If the process lacks transparency, however, it could become another source of distrust.

For now, the dispute has already affected the school community.

The students, who have the least say in the argument, are the ones whose education could suffer if the disagreement drags on.
