11-Year-Old Boy Forcibly Circumcised by Older Pupils

​An 11-year-old pupil is recovering and a criminal investigation is underway after he was dragged into a school restroom and brutally circumcised by four older boys during a school break.

​The horrific assault occurred at Sinqobile Primary School in the Soshanguve township, north of Pretoria. According to police and family accounts, three older students pinned the Grade 5 victim down while a fourth forcibly pulled down his shorts. Using a sharp blade and a tight red ribbon to restrict blood flow, the attackers performed the crude procedure without anesthetic, mimicking the methods of unregulated traditional initiation rites.

​Left bleeding and in excruciating pain inside a toilet cubicle, the traumatized boy was threatened with severe violence if he reported the incident. He suffered in silence for days, concealing his injuries until his mother noticed his unusual gait and severe discomfort.

​”He then showed me his swollen private parts and I rushed him to the doctor, and it was then that we learned four pupils had circumcised him,” the boy’s mother told reporters. She immediately lodged a formal criminal complaint.

​The South African Police Service’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit has launched a full investigation into the attack, treating the case as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that inquiries are active, though no arrests have been made.

​The Gauteng Department of Education stated that it is monitoring the police probe to determine appropriate administrative actions. Meanwhile, Deputy Principal George Mahlangu expressed profound shock, emphasizing that educational institutions must remain safe havens for children.

​Child safety advocates and community members have expressed widespread outrage over the incident, which has thrown a harsh spotlight on campus security, intense bullying, and the dangerous creep of unauthorized initiation culture among younger school children.
