The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulamlik Sarkindaji, has decided to stop the planned hosting of the wedding for 100 orphan girls in his constituency, stating he will not attend the event.
This decision comes after Women Affairs Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye took legal action to halt the wedding.
Sarkindaji announced this on Tuesday during a media briefing, expressing that the minister had overstepped her bounds.

He suggested that the minister should take over the sponsorship of the wedding ceremony.
Despite halting his involvement, the Speaker revealed that he had already provided funds to the girls’ parents through traditional leaders and clerics in his constituency and that he would not retract these funds.
Sarkindaji clarified that his intention to sponsor the wedding was driven by the poverty of the girls’ parents, contrary to media reports suggesting it was a constituency project.
Further details are expected to follow.
