The University of Benin has taken a significant step by indefinitely suspending its Student Union Government (SUG) following a concerning incident involving an attack on Olumide Akpata, a candidate of the Edo State Labour Party, allegedly by some students believed to be members of the student union.
The university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, released a statement on Monday confirming the suspension, effective from April 29, 2024.
The decision came after the management received a report from a panel tasked with investigating the incidents that occurred in the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on April 12, 2024.

The statement outlines that the Vice Chancellor has approved the indefinite suspension of the students’ union, and all union officers are instructed to hand over any union properties in their possession to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by April 30, 2024.
During the period of suspension, a Caretaker Committee composed of representatives from various faculties, schools, and institutes will oversee students’ activities.
This action underscores the university’s commitment to maintaining peace and order on campus and ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and staff.
