President Donald J. Trump ignited fierce bipartisan condemnation on Monday after posting a provocative social media message that appeared to mock the tragic stabbing deaths of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, over the weekend.
The couple was found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles-area home on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Authorities arrested their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, in connection with the killings. Police reports indicate Nick, who has a history of drug addiction and mental health struggles, confessed to the murders during questioning. No motive has been officially released, but family friends described the incident as a devastating domestic tragedy rooted in long-standing personal issues, not politics.
Trump’s post on Truth Social, shared hours after the news broke, read: “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

The message quickly drew rebukes from across the political spectrum. Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie called it “inappropriate and disrespectful,” tweeting: “Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered. I guess my elected GOP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they’re afraid? I challenge anyone to defend it.”
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch Trump ally, urged empathy for the family: “Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other issues, and their remaining children are left in serious mourning and heartbreak. This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”
Reiner, 78, was a legendary figure in Hollywood, directing hits like The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men, while co-starring on the classic sitcom All in the Family. A vocal critic of Trump since 2016, he frequently used social media to lambast the president, amplifying anti-Trump sentiments among liberal celebrities. His wife, Michele, 75, was a producer and philanthropist known for supporting progressive causes.
The LAPD confirmed the arrests and scene details in a Monday briefing, noting the couple’s other children—actor Matt Reiner and daughter Tracy Reiner—are cooperating with investigators and have requested privacy. No formal charges against Nick have been filed as of press time, pending autopsy results.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment directly on Trump’s post during a briefing, pivoting to praise the administration’s economic record. Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, labeled the remarks “cruel and unbecoming of a president,” while Hollywood figures like director Judd Apatow mourned Reiner as a “giant” and condemned the politicization of his death.
As the story unfolds, the post has amplified divisions in an already polarized America, turning a private family’s grief into national fodder.
