Prominent Nigerian figures, including President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari, have expressed sorrow following the passing of Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, a distinguished politician and former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Onu, who also served as Abia State’s first civilian governor, passed away at the age of 73 after a brief illness.
President Tinubu, in a statement conveyed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, praised Onu as a shining star in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Tinubu acknowledged Onu’s pivotal role in the establishment of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his contributions to the party’s success in the 2015 elections.

Former President Buhari, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, described Onu as an intellectual giant and outstanding scientific mind.

Buhari extended condolences to Onu’s family and recognized his significant impact as a notable politician and former chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party.

Several other prominent figures, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and political leaders from Abia State, expressed deep sadness over Onu’s demise.
They highlighted his pivotal role in shaping Abia State’s development and his unwavering dedication to nation-building.
