On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Senate made a decision to dedicate one of its committee rooms to the memory of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun.
Oba Balogun, aged 81, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, exactly two years after assuming the throne on March 11, 2022.
This resolution by the Senate to immortalize the late monarch stemmed from a motion introduced by Senator Sharafadeen Ali (APC Oyo South).
Senator Ali highlighted the late Olubadan’s exceptional leadership, community development efforts, and his service-oriented approach to politics, which led to his election as a Senator from 1999 to 2003.

“The late Olubadan epitomized peace and upheld the rich culture and values of the Yoruba people,” Ali stated.
Senators Yinus Akintunde (Central) and Abdulfai Buhari (North) from Oyo State also praised the positive influence the late monarch had on the lives of people he encountered.
Buhari particularly mentioned how the late monarch’s book, “Arrogance of Power,” provided valuable guidance after he won election to the House of Representatives in 2003.
Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP Benue South), further extolled the virtues of the late Olubadan.
After deliberations, the Senate unanimously adopted all the resolutions proposed, including the decision to honor the late monarch by naming a committee room after him. A moment of silence was also observed in his honor.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, urged Senator Abdulfatai Buhari to distribute copies of “Arrogance of Power” authored by the deceased to all Senators, emphasizing its significance in guiding their actions.
