Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL), the company tasked with securing the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) in the Eastern Corridor, has significantly contributed to environmental restoration in the Niger Delta by reducing pipeline vandalism, a major source of pollution in the region.
Before PINL’s involvement three years ago, the Niger Delta was plagued by soot pollution caused by illegal refining activities. Since then, through effective pipeline surveillance and continuous engagement with local communities, the atmosphere has improved markedly, with near-zero pipeline infractions reported, enabling uninterrupted crude oil flow and boosting Nigeria’s oil revenue.
Dr. Akpos Mezeh, PINL’s Community Relations Consultant, highlighted that the remediation of the environment is evident, noting the reduction of soot deposits that once discolored clothes dried outdoors. This improvement has also restored investor confidence in the region’s economy.

PINL’s operations extend beyond surveillance to fostering peace and supporting community development, though challenges such as local instability and stakeholder collusion persist. The company calls on community leaders to discourage pipeline vandalism, emphasizing the long-term environmental and health hazards of oil spills, which contaminate water bodies and wetlands.
Stakeholders, including community leaders and groups like the Movement for the Survival of Ijaw Ethnic Nationality (MOSIEND), have praised PINL’s transparency, community engagement, and positive impact on pipeline security and environmental protection. They urge other surveillance firms to emulate PINL’s collaborative approach.
Overall, PINL’s surveillance efforts have not only safeguarded critical oil infrastructure but also contributed to environmental restoration and socio-economic benefits in the Niger Delta, reinforcing the importance of community partnership in pipeline security.
