Nigerian author Oyindamola Olugbile has won the prestigious 2025 Nigeria Prize for Literature, taking home the grand prize of $100,000 for her debut novel, “Sanya.” The announcement was made at a ceremony held at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, where Olugbile’s work was praised for its compelling storytelling and captivating pace.
“Sanya,” praised by adjudicators as a “fascinating novel” that grips the reader from the cover to the plot, explores themes of dangerous love, loss, and destiny set against a richly imagined, mythical empire that intertwines Yoruba traditions and the influence of the Òrìsà. Readers are taken on a thrilling journey following the protagonist, Sanya, whose unique powers and complex fate unfold with relentless suspense and an engaging narrative rhythm.

The Advisory Board, chaired by Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, described the judging process as rigorous and noted that Olugbile’s novel stood out among a field of distinguished entries for its masterful plotting, character depth, and linguistic command. The novel was selected over other notable works, including those by established authors Chigozie Obioma and Nikki May.

Olugbile, a University of Lagos Creative Arts graduate with further academic credentials from institutions such as Harvard Business School Online and King’s College London, balances her career as a social impact management consultant and education advocate with her storytelling passion. “Sanya” marks her bold literary debut and signals a new, vibrant voice in Nigerian literature.
