ABEOKUTA – The Ogun State Government has strongly condemned a protest staged by some of its athletes at the ongoing National Sports Festival, describing the action as “regrettable” and “uncalled for.” The protest, reportedly over delayed allowances, was swiftly addressed by the state, which asserted that payments had already commenced, and the athletes acted out of “impatience.”
In a statement released by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, the government expressed disappointment, stating the protest was “inconsistent with the values and objectives the state upholds.”
Akinmade emphasized that all necessary arrangements for the payment of allowances had been concluded and were slated for Tuesday.
“Governor Dapo Abiodun remains deeply sensitive and committed to the welfare of all participants at the festival,” Akinmade affirmed. “There is no circumstance under which he would allow Ogun athletes to suffer or be neglected.”
The Special Adviser contrasted the athletes’ actions with the state’s successful hosting of the festival, from the “grand opening ceremony to the impressive performance of Team Ogun.”
He further disclosed that bank alerts for allowances had already begun reaching athletes as scheduled. “Those who protested did so in error. It was a clear case of impatience,” he concluded.
The incident highlights the perennial issue of athlete welfare and timely remuneration at major sporting events, even as states strive to present a positive image during such high-profile competitions. The Ogun State government’s swift response aims to mitigate any negative perception arising from the protest and reinforce its commitment to its athletes.
