NSCDC trains 135 officers, urges professionalism in weapon handling

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has emphasised the importance of professionalism and adherence to the rules of engagement among the newly trained 135 personnel.

Odumosu made this statement during the passing-out parade for the 2024 Batch A Basic Arms Training on Tuesday in Abuja.

He highlighted that these principles are critical to the effective execution of the Corps’ mandate in safeguarding lives and property.

“Consequently, a total of 135 personnel were retrained and equipped with knowledge and skills in weapon handling through months of rigorous regimentation, defined by global standards. These officers are now ready to be deployed.

“This is a significant step taken to tackle the challenges of vandalism and other crimes impeding the peace and development of the Federal Capital Territory in particular, and the nation as a whole,” he said.

In his address, Odumosu stressed that the training was designed not only to enhance the personnel’s skills in weapon handling but also to instil a deep understanding of the ethical responsibilities that accompany such authority.

“As you step into your roles, remember that to whom much is given, much is expected. In the discharge of your duties, always bear in mind the rules of engagement. Be professional in handling your rifles,” he urged the newly trained officers.

The passing-out ceremony marked a significant achievement for the FCT Command, being the first time the training was conducted entirely by the Command’s own instructors.

This initiative aligns with the Corps’ commitment to providing effective security solutions while ensuring that personnel operate within established guidelines.

He called on the officers to remain vigilant and disciplined, reminding them of the rules of engagement that govern their interactions with the public.

“Protect yourself, protect your rifle, and protect lives and property,” Odumosu stated.

He added that the Command has made progress in combating vandalism and theft in the FCT, with over 120 suspects arrested since the beginning of the year and numerous convictions secured.

Odumosu concluded, “From January this year to date, the Command has arrested over 120 individuals suspected of vandalising public facilities and theft.

“Out of these numerous cases, we have secured many court convictions, with others still pending.

“With this new set of trainees, the Command is better positioned to surpass our achievements in the fight against vandalism and the protection of lives and property.”
