FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – A wave of grief has swept through the Nigerian community in Texas and beyond following a devastating road traffic accident that claimed the lives of a mother and two of her children on Sunday morning.
The victims have been identified as 44-year-old Nihinlolawa Agoro and two young women, aged 19 and 22, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary reports from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office indicate that the family was traveling in an SUV along US-90A, between Harlem Road and Pitts Road, when the tragedy struck at approximately 9:00 a.m.
According to investigators, a truck traveling in the opposite direction (westbound) suddenly crossed the center median. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which then slammed head-on into the Agoro family’s SUV. The impact was so severe that the truck overturned and immediately burst into flames.
Emergency responders arrived to find a scene of total carnage. While three occupants of the SUV lost their lives instantly, two other children—a 14-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy—survived the initial impact but sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they remain under medical care.
The 20-year-old driver of the truck was also hospitalized with significant injuries.
Authorities noted that the victims were dressed in formal attire, suggesting they were likely en route to a Sunday church service when the accident occurred.
“Our hearts go out to the family during this unimaginably difficult time,” a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office stated. “We are working diligently to determine the exact cause of the median crossover, including whether speed or alcohol played a role in this tragedy.”
Tributes have poured in on social media as friends and relatives struggle to process the loss. Lola Oni, a family member, confirmed the heartbreaking news via Facebook, sparking a litany of condolences from the Nigerian diaspora. Many described Nihinlolawa as a “pillar of her community” and a devoted mother.
