NAFDAC Alerts on Surge of Fake Edible Oils

Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a critical public alert on the rampant importation and sale of substandard, unregistered edible oils across major markets. The warning stems from concerns raised by Lebruni Agro Limited, a registered local producer of hygienic soybean oil (Liorga brand) and palm kernel oil, following their market surveillance. These illicit products pose severe health threats due to unknown sources, production methods, and potential contaminants like chemical residues or degraded fats. ​

Affected Brands and Locations

The implicated brands include FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX, and LA JONIC, which operate hidden warehousing to fuel illegal networks. These oils lack manufacturer details or NAFDAC registration numbers and do not appear in the agency’s database. They have inundated markets in cities such as Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ikom, Calabar, Lagos (Trade Fair, Okiarin, Ikotun, Mushin), Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Idiroko, Makurdi, and Lafia. ​

NAFDAC emphasizes that consuming these unregulated oils risks cardiovascular diseases, liver damage, and chronic conditions from impurities. Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers must verify product authenticity, checking for NAFDAC numbers and physical quality before purchase. The agency calls for supply chain vigilance to halt this influx. ​
